Quarterbacks

There is one position in football that makes the most money and is considered the most important, and that position is the Quarterback. The captain of the offense is vital in the construction of any football team. Without a quarterback, the offense cannot function. Today I'll be diving into the New York Giants quarterbacks from the 2023-24 season as well as the future of the position for the team.

Let's start off with the man who was given an extension in the offseason, Daniel Jones(pictured below). Daniel Jones has been with the Giants since 2019 when he was drafted by the New York team. He sat behind Giants legend Eli Manning for a few games and then he snagged the starting job and hasn't lost it since. Jones has had a bumpy road with the Giants that includes turnover issues, a playoff birth and win, and then another bad season. Jones was sidelined early in the year with a neck injury in week 5, which kept him out until week 9 against the Raiders. Unfortunately for Jones, he would get injured again, this time with a torn ACL. Daniel Jones went 1-5 for the 6 games he played, passing for 909 yards, 2 TDs, and 6 interceptions, not what you would call stellar by any means. Jones has been said to be the starter for next year but there is still a whole off-season to go.

Moving on to the Giant's backup QB, we have the veteran Tyrod Taylor (Pictured below). Taylor signed with the Giants in the off-season before the 2022 season for a backup QB role. Taylor has gone in for Jones due to injuries in multiple games throughout his tenure with the Giants, even becoming the starter this year when Jones went down the first time. In 11 games played this season, Taylor threw for 1341 yards, 5 TDs, and 3 interceptions. Taylor started 5 games before going down with an injury but would then take the starting role back from Tommy Devito later in the year after Devito's play fell off. He is most likely not returning with the team but that remains to be seen.

Speaking of Devito, he's the last QB we have to talk about. Tommy Devito(Pictured below) went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft and was signed by his hometown team New York Giants. Devito was expected to just be the practice squad QB until Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor got hurt, propelling him into the starting role in the middle of the Giants-Jets game. Devito would only throw a couple passes in the loss and would go back to being the backup until Tyrod Taylor was hurt once again. In 9 games played, Devito threw for 1101 yards, 8 TDs, and 3 Interceptions. For a UDFA QB, not too shabby. Unfortunately for Devito, he most likely won't see the starting role ever again as the Giants possibly look to bring in a new rookie QB.

The Giants have stated Daniel Jones will be the starter but reports have come out that GM Joe Schoen would like to add a rookie into the mix during the draft, so let's take a look at some of the prospects. First is the consensus number one overall pick, Caleb Williams out of USC. Williams was the Heisman trophy winner for the 2022 season and continued to make his case as the best QB in the draft with his 2023 season. Below you'll find a video showcasing his highlights.     From those clips alone it's easy to see the Patrick Mahomes comparisons he's been getting. However, he isn't the only prospect the Giants could be looking to trade up for

Next, we have UNC's Drake Maye. Maye has been the 2nd best QB in this class for a while despite his production going down this year, he still showed how good he can be. Maye has the arm like the best of them such as Bill's QB Josh Allen, and has the mobility to maneuver the pocket at will. He's an overall great prospect for any team looking for a new franchise guy. Another prospect to mention is LSU QB Jayden Daniels. Daniels wasn't looked at as a top 3 QB prospect in the draft until his play picked up this year with LSU. Daniels is a little undersized but he's got great mobility and natural traits that can be worked on to make him a good QB for a team. He is the most likely to fall to the Giants at the 6th overall pick but if not there are QBs such as Oregon's Bo Nix or Washington's Michael Penix Jr. who could also be drafted by the Giants.
Although the QB position is bleak right now for Big Blue, they have a chance to change that with this upcoming draft. We'll just have to wait for the draft in April to see what happens. Thanks for taking the time to read this, the next position that I'll take a look at will be the Giant's RB room.
